His work often concerns the relationship between humans and the environment, and emotions that lead to ideas and new possibilities.
“ I enjoy the physical properties of various materials and the techniques used to transform them. My creative process is an expression of my experiences and self discovery.”
His recent sculptures primarily highlight environmental issues caused by human impact. He transforms cardboard into forms, which are beyond their original function as a container for consumer goods. He exploits the inherent frailty of cardboard strips to create sculptures.
“ Many consumer goods we buy come in a cardboard box, but then it goes to waste, it’s a symbol of our consumer society. I thought it would be interesting to expand the possibilities of making objects that may raise environmental awareness from common, mundane and recycled materials.”
Taro Iiyama was born in Tokyo Japan, and have been based in Australia since 2002. He has spent much of his time as landscape designer / landscaper, has studied and graduated Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Jewellery Design) and Diploma of visual Arts.
His jewellery making explores fabrication techniques to construct three-dimensional form with different surface treatments. He relishes the challenge of creating pieces that combine complex design and functional issues.
“Jewellery plays a unique part in people’s lives. We adorn ourselves with our favourite pieces in our daily lives and special occasions. I enjoy the thought that my jewellery will go on to have an intimate and personal relationship with the people who will wear them. They will evolve meanings beyond my original intentions.”
